SiteGround Optimizer V6
Table of Contents
Since the launch of the SiteGround Optimizer plugin, we have been constantly working on adding new features, improving existing ones, and making sure that we use the best technology available to achieve a blazing fast loading speed for all of our users. That being said, we’re happy to introduce a major update to the SiteGround Optimizer plugin – v6.
Brand New Design and Structure
One of the biggest changes you’ll notice is our brand new design with separate pages and a brand new dashboard. We have been adding more and more features to the plugin recently and we decided that the previous tab structure was not the best interface for the numerous improvements we have in mind. That’s why we have divided the interface into 5 pages, consisting of separate sets of carefully crafted tools, designed to optimize your website, improve loading speed and even decrease your resource usage.
New Page – The Dashboard
The entirely new Dashboard offers a quick look at the current optimization status of your website, along with shortcuts to the relevant pages where optimizations may be in order. Since keeping your WordPress application, plugins, and themes up to date is important for your website speed and security, we’ve made sure to add a notification in the Dashboard in case your WordPress and/or plugins need an update.
Recommended Features Tag
While we’ve always done our best to explain the different features you can find in the Optimizer, we realise that some of them may still sound complicated to the regular WordPress user and one can find themself struggling to figure out which of the features they need to use. To help you make the best choice for your website, we have added a “Recommended” tag to all SiteGround Optimizer features that we’re certain to speed up your website without breaking something or interfering with other settings.
Improved Image Compression and Image Features
We have significantly improved our image compression technology to ensure that even at the highest compression and size savings, your images continue to look as good as ever. Additionally, we have added a “Preview” option so you can ensure that the compression level you have selected does not visibly affect the quality of your images. You can also choose to do a backup of your original images before you start the compression process – this is a great feature in case you plan to change the compression level in future or you just want to have a piece of mind.
WebP image generation has also been improved and a new option was added for larger images – automatic resizing for all images whose width is larger than 2560px, which is more than enough for most displays where websites appear.
Code Refactoring
The plugins redesign and restructuring gave us an opportunity to refactor our code and make sure that everything is optimized and tested for the best possible performance. While the whole plugin has benefited from the refactoring, there are two tools where the change was noticeable – the WordPress Heartbeat Optimization (available in the Environment page) which precision and options were improved, and the Automatic Cache Purge (available in Caching) which now includes the option to purge the WordPress API Cache too.
We have really enjoyed making this brand new version of the SiteGround Optimizer and we’re confident that the tools we have developed will help you serve the fastest and best version of your site. Drop us a comment to say which of the Optimizer features you like most and what would you like to see in future releases.

Great Guys! Love your work as always👍

So, "... the option to purge the WordPress API Cache too. ". For the uninitiated, is some elaboration possible please? Maybe, an example circumstance under which this should be set (where one hasn't explicitly coded API caching oneself)? Thank you.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
If you are not using the API to get information or other functionality, leave it uncheck. It will be handled by the default caching time of the server saving purge requests.

Does image compression run additional compression each time it runs? Are you planning to allow certain images to be skipped by the process?
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
No, it doesn't re-optimize images unless the compression level is changed. As to your other question - yes, custom compression level is coming up in next updates.
Christophe
Wonderful, thank you

Amazing! Great updates, Im still waiting on a youtube Iframe optimizator, for exmaple there are plugins that (take a screenshot) of the preview and replace the iframe with that, when you click the picture the youtube iframe loads. I use another plugin which with this makes my pages that contain vidoes have 100% score on google. I would love to it be included on the optimzer and so reduce the number of plugins.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
It's on the roadmap :)
Ivan
Is this feature avaliable now?
Ivan Naidenov Siteground Team
Hello Ivan! Although this feature has not been added yet we continue to collect client feedback to fuel our future improvements. We add new features in part based on the volume of client requests. Thank you for the comment, it is duly noted.

I am about to sell my HRISTO P is godlike shirt :) Speed test for mobile doesnt work, speed test for computer fails 8 of 10. Just contacted support regarding cloudflare full page caching, can't get it to work, global api key is not accepted. and :) the old interface was faster to setup, having to go to the right to select options, is really silly.. environment etc.. and suddenly css, java is in the top center.. The image optimizing is great though... but please get the old version design back.. and ofc. get rid of the bugs.. Atanas just landed my ticket on the 2nd lvl support. :) Have a great day Hristo ;P
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
Don't do it, it's going to be the hottest item on the Black Friday :) Recently Cloudflare had some changes resulting in similar problems. We will release a new version today addressing all reported bugs. As to the interface, it allows us to add more features without clogging everything. After all, you don't play with the frontend settings on a daily basis and few more clicks are as long as it's clear what does what.

The only module I haven't turned on is "Image optimization". Am I correct assuming that when I allow your plugins to do the image optimization, the metadata (EXIF etc) will be purged? If you could do the optimization while keeping the metadata intact, then I would most definitely use this feature + recommend you for all the people in my SEO circles.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
I am afraid that's not a feature we have. For web usage metadata is not needed and stripped by our scripts to lower the image size.

The new Optimiser looks great, however the main issue I'm having is that most of my sites are built using Divi and its also been upgraded recently with speed and performance optimisation Tools, which crossover and sometimes conflict with the same features in SG Optimiser. Its a case of trying to decide which features in each to activate/deactivate to have each site work well and without any conflict issues. Would be great if you were able to look at this maybe offer a Guide around this.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
Stop all Divi optiomizations and do it with SiteGround Optimizer. Theme should not have that functionality in first place, it will lead into conflicts and bloat.

is it only for Wordpress websites? Anything for others platforms?
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
We don't plan to provide such services for other platforms at this time.

Hi there. I've been using your plugin since 2017 (V4...) and yes, it got better and better. So did the cache options and php versions. So, thank you SG and well done. For the record, I had saved my old speedtest scores for 3 wp sites. This is pre Guthenberg and blocks... I've continued using the same 3 themes - "twentysixteen" + "twentyseventeen" + "lodestar". So the only changes are the WP version and theme(s) version. And if I compare the old results with today's results, well, today's are excellent but not as good (especially for mobile) that they used to be... while it should be the opposite. Do you have an explanation? Thanks,
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
I suspect design changes. Our optimizations are working for both Desktop and Mobile (unless you exclude mobile-speciffic scripts from them for example) so if there's a difference in Mobile only, I would blame the theme and/or content. Check your media size, the theme and the html output produced by those blocks.

For the old image compression, it seemed just to compress them automatically. Now with the new version of SO Version 6, you can choose a percentage. Can I ask: What has the previous version's percentage compression? Thanks.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
Leave it at low (25%) compression - it is the old default and a good value to lower size while remaining quality.
Sean
Hi Hristo. Thanks for your reply. So just to confirm: the old compression percentage before the SG Optimizer update was exactly 25%, is that right? Also, might there be more percentage options in the future? Thanks again.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
Yes, we matched it. We will add filter for custom values in case you need it.
Sean
Also, I forgot to ask: if photos on the server were already compressed with the older version of SG Optimizer, are they still all compressed now, or do we have to compress them all over again with the new version of SG Optimizer? Thanks.
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
No, if you haven't changed the compression level you don't need to do anything.

In previous versions of SG Optimizer, Web P image generation has produced poor results for my SVG images (great for everything else). In the new version, are there any improvements in this area?
Hristo Pandjarov Siteground Team
We do not generate WebP copies of SVG images. SVG is a vector format and is already optimized. That must be some other plugin you are using and is completely unrelated to the SiteGround Optimizer.
Jony
Is there a way to set the compression, but for certain images over ride or make an exception so that the image is not compressed?
Gabriela Andonova Siteground Team
Hey Jony, thank you for commenting. You can edit the image compression settings in the Media section of SiteGround Optimizer. Previewing and comparing compression levels is possible, as well as compressing existing images and overwriting ones with a custom compression level. Currently, there is no option to exclude certain images only from compression - you can back up the original images even though they are not being deleted when compressed.
