Mozilla Thunderbird Tutorial

Configure Thunderbird Manually

To configure manually your email accounts with Mozilla Thunderbird first open the program on your computer. Then click the Thunderbird tab > Account Settings.

On Windows, click Account Settings at the top right corner of the Thunderbird window.

From the new window press on Account Actions, then Add Mail Account account.

Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the Your name field for all outgoing messages. Input your full email address in the Email address field. Provide the password for the email account. Click Continue.

If your email address and password are correct, you will see a confirmation message “Configuration found at email provider. You can accept the suggested email settings and click Done to add your email account to Thunderbird.

If the suggested settings are not working or you want to configure them manually, click on the Configure manually button at the bottom of the window to continue. Use the following settings:

  • In the INCOMING SERVER section:
    • The Protocol should automatically be set to IMAP. Unless you specifically want to use POP3 you should leave it that way;
    • For Hostname check the exact hostname to use with each of your mail accounts in your Site Tools > Email > Accounts, choose the preferred email account and go to kebab menu > Mail Configuration and select Manual Settings tab;
    • For Port set 993;
    • When you input the port number, the Connection security field will automatically be set to SSL/TLS. Leave it like that.
    • For Authentication method select Autodetect;
    • Set Username to your full email address (i.e username@yourdomain.com)
  • In the OUTGOING SERVER section:
    • For Hostname check the exact hostname to use with each of your mail accounts in your Site Tools > Email > Accounts, choose the preferred email account and go to kebab menu > Mail Configuration and select Manual Settings tab;
    • For Port set 465;
    • When you input the port number, the Connection security field will automatically be set to SSL/TLS. Leave it like that.
    • For Connection Security and Authentication method select Autodetect;
    • Set Username to your full email address (i.e username@yourdomain.com)

When ready, click the Re-test button so that Thunderbird can test if the settings are correct.

To verify the email settings, go to your Site Tools -> Email -> Accounts. Choose the preferred domain name and go to the kebab menu > Mail Configuration. In there click on Manual Settings.

If you have configured everything correctly, the Done button should become available. Click it and your email address will be added to your Thunderbird and you can start managing your emails.

Edit existing email account settings in Thunderbird

Open the Mozilla Thunderbird application and go to Thunderbird -> Account Settings.

On Windows, click Account Settings at the top right corner of the Thunderbird window.

From the new window expand the entry for the desired account and click Server Settings.

Go to your Site Tools > Email > Accounts, choose the preferred email account and go to kebab menu > Mail Configuration and select Manual Settings tab. Copy the Incoming Server hostname and paste it in the Server Name field in Thunderbird. Press Enter on your keyboard to confirm the change and a popup will appear explaining that Thunderbird needs to be restarted for the change to be applied. Click Restart.

When the application restarts, you will be presented with a popup that asks for the password for your email account. Input the password and click OK. Now, the new server hostname should be applied.

Check the other settings in the same page and make sure they are correct. You can find the settings to use with each of your mail accounts with SiteGround with your Mozilla Thunderbird in your Site Tools > Email > Accounts, choose the preferred email account and go to kebab menu > Mail Configuration and select Manual Settings tab.

If everything is set up correctly, your Mozilla Thunderbird should show the messages from your email account with SiteGround and you can now start using and managing it using your mail client.
